Howard McCarthy, President; David McCarthy, Chairman & CEO; and Shaun O’Brien, Executive Vice President, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Founded in 1952 by the late William McCarthy, father of David and Howard McCarthy, Dumac recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. The company was originally formed to provide repairs on existing NCR equipment and refurbish and resell used NCR cash registers. In early 1990, the company became an NCR dealer and established sales offices in Syracuse and Watertown. Later, they expanded into the Albany area and subsequently expanded their service territory to all of New York except New York City after adding the Panasonic product line.

In the fall of 1993, they moved from their facility at 1628 Erie Blvd. East (4,200 Sq. ft.) to a larger building at Ridings Road (9,500 sq. ft.). However, they soon outgrew that facility as well and moved to their present location at 19 Corporate Circle in East Syracuse in 1999 (26,500 sq. ft.). Both of these facilities were financed with the assistance of the SBA 504 program through GSBDC.

The company has continued to grow and is now engaged in the selling and servicing of cash registers, computers, CCTV surveillance systems and supermarket scanning systems within a target area including New York, New England and south to the Maryland - Washington, DC area. Today, Dumac focuses on three main retail sectors – fast food restaurants, grocery stores and fine dining restaurants. Dumac is heavily involved in most of the technology that these sectors deploy.

According to David McCarthy of Dumac, "Dumac was very honored to be nominated by GSBDC for the SBA Small Business Excellence award for both our growth within upstate N.Y. as well as celebrating our 50th anniversary. As you all know, growth and success doesn't just happen. Dumac is blessed with many hard working and dedicated employees that are passionate about our business.” Adds McCarthy, “We put our customer first in all that we do and that makes it much easier to do business." Since 1990, Dumac has grown from just over 20 employees to current employment of 71.

In 1986, the husband and wife team of Michael and Mary Hansen purchased Morgan's Print Shop and started Hansen & Hansen Quality Printing in a storefront on West Onondaga Street in Syracuse. Mike's mother joined the company the following year. In 1989, the company incorporated as Syracuse Computer Forms to reflect its entry into the production of custom-printed computer forms. Mike's father joined the business in 1992 to work with the SBA and the City of Syracuse to assist with their expansion.

As a printer for brokers and dealers only, Hansen & Hansen has become a leader in the business forms marketplace and the graphic arts community. To reach this point, Michael and Mary have committed to investing in top-of-the-line presses and related equipment to get top quality work out on time at the agreed upon price.

Today, the company remains in the Haun family with grandson Mark serving as president and chief executive officer and granddaughter Patti serving as both vice president and branch manager of the Fulton store.

Haun Welding distributes a full line of welding equipment and supplies. The firm also owns and operates a modern gas fill plant and is a major supplier of compressed and liquid gases. Over the years the company has expanded to 12 branch locations in New York State and Vermont.

2000 - GSBDC Recognizes Design Prototyping Technologies, Inc. for Business Excellence

On May 25, 2000, the U.S. Small Business Administration hosted their second annual Small Business Excellence Awards Luncheon at which GSBDC honored Design Prototyping Technologies, Inc. (DPT).

The company is a rapid parts service bureau established by Michael Rufo and Daniel Sammons in 1993. Using state of the art rapid prototyping (RP) equipment (Stereolithography and Selective Laser Sintering), DPT builds fully functional prototypes from customer generated Computer Aided Design (CAD) files.

In contrast to previous prototyping methods that required weeks to deliver a prototype that was representative of the CAD file, using RP equipment allows the prototypes to be delivered in days. These rapid deliveries permit companies such as Black & Decker, Carrier, Welch Allyn and others to rework and test the design a number of times in the same amount of time that was required using the previous methods to fabricate the first evaluation, functional testing and CAD file evaluation.

DPT has been the recipient of two SBA 504 loans through GSBDC, which were used to purchase equipment and help DPT continue growing their business.

1999 - GSBDC Recognizes Allen Tool Phoenix, Inc. for Business Excellence

On May 25, 1999, the U.S. Small Business Administration hosted their first annual Small Business Excellence Awards Luncheon at which GSBDC honored Allen Tool Phoenix, Inc.

Cheryl Maines, the present stockholder, established the company in 1991 when her former employer discontinued operations. Cheryl and another co-worker, Richard Cook, knew the business and customer base and decided to start a similar business using their knowledge of the market place.

Allen Tool operates as a close tolerance machine shop and specializes in machining and welding parts of a rocket engine (upper stage propulsion on unmanned RL10 engines) for one of their major customers, Pratt Whitney.

In 1996, Cheryl bought out her partner and is the sole owner of the company. The company is projecting that sales will continue to increase and expects to continue adding to their current employment of 20, as Allen Tool's customer base enlarges.

The Greater Syracuse Business Development Corporation congratulates Cheryl Maines for establishing and growing a small business and creating jobs in the Central New York community. GSBDC says Allen Tool Phoenix exemplifies the type of customers the 504 program targets.
